From jewels to esoteric books to cufflinks, there’s an endless array of Masonic gifts to choose from. But when – and how – should these be given to Freemasons? Since there are many elements to consider, this article outlines the etiquette of giving gifts for a Mason.
When are Freemason gifts given?

Often, when a Lodge presents a member with a gift, it’s accompanied by a commemorative plaque (with the date and occasion included). If you’re considering giving gifts to Masons, there is no specific set of rules to follow. However, certain etiquette will ensure that the present is appropriate – and appropriately given.
Freemasons pride themselves on giving back to communities through fundraising, charity, and volunteer work. Normally, these efforts aren’t recognised outside of their Lodges. What if you’d like to give a special token of appreciation to a remarkable person?
There’s no hard and fast rule about when to give gifts to a Mason. It’s completely up to the purchaser.
Think about what he enjoys
Giving a Masonic gift starts with intent. Regardless of the purpose or recipient, whenever you shop for a present, don’t fall into the trap of shopping for yourself.

Before you purchase any piece of regalia, ask yourself the following:
- What Lodge position(s) does he hold?
- What Order does he belong to?
- What are his personal interests outside the Lodge?
- Is he known for his sense of humour or is he more serious?
- Does he dress more casually or professionally?
- How well do you know him?
If you’re not extremely close with this person – or he attends a different Lodge – ask another member for advice. Whatever you choose, you should be celebrating the recipient’s achievements and positive qualities.
How to purchase gifts if you’re not a Freemason

Freemasonry has existed for hundreds of years and comes with plenty of legends and traditions. This means that many of its symbols apply to different Orders and Degrees. If you’re not a member, take time to research the meanings of insignia before making a purchase. After all, you wouldn’t want to give Knights of Malta regalia to a Craft Mason!
If you’re unsure of the Order your recipient belongs to, it’s likely safe to choose regalia that incorporates a square and compass (like the cufflinks pictured above). This insignia is applicable to every member around the world.
1. Avoid public displays

While certain members may not mind opening a piece of regalia in public, Freemasonry is a secret organisation for a reason! You can almost certainly hand him the present within your Lodge. If you’re out at a restaurant or bar, you can casually explain that the package doesn’t need to be opened right away.
2. Add a note

While a beautiful pair of cufflinks or a gold pocket watch should delight almost any Freemason, a heartfelt note is a gesture that’s just as important. Go beyond Lodge life and outline why you appreciate this person, their efforts, their dedication, and so on.
3. Select a quality gift

We’ve all been gifted items that don’t suit us or break due to cheap quality. Don’t make this mistake. A smaller, high-quality present may be more thoughtful than something large and flashy. When you want to celebrate someone special, choose something meaningful that’s fashioned to last, comes with a guarantee, and reflects the recipient’s personality.
4. Stick to a budget
Purchasing an item with a higher price tag might make the recipient uncomfortable. They may also feel that they need to return the favour someday. Masons live by a code of modesty and charity, so be sure that your gift is thoughtful but not outlandish.
Note: An exception might be if your present is purchased and given by multiple members.
